::: Magic Sardinia IDEAS TO COPY of Mauro Errico
-----------------------------------------------------------
A luxury villa just
a few steps away
from Porto Cervo.
Harmony in colors
and materials.
The elm floor fits
in perfectly.
Sardinia has recently been receiving
more and more television
coverage, especially following
the arrival of new “ethnic
contingents” (Russians, more
than anyone else) in Costa Smeralda
that has captured the mass
media’s attention. Everyone
knows that this part of Sardinia is
dotted with prestigious properties,
but what’s new is the veritable
industry linked to the restructuring,
interior décor and design
of premium quality villas and apartments
that the new owners
have created.
This article will describe and
show you the completely redecorated
interiors of one of these villas
in the unique setting offered
by the Sardinian coast near Porto
Cervo. The villa was given a complete
facelift that, spared only the
outer walls (built of precious stone),
has changed and touched
every other part of the complex,
even the gardens.
The architect and designer who preserved
the villa’s original architectural
structure intact intervened
in every room, furnished
new bathrooms, laid new wiring and heating systems, raised new
stairways, and redecorated everywhere,
from the furniture to the
curtains.
::: A floor in Elm that looks like Doussié
The client chose a layered parquet
floor in Elmwood with one
special request: that the color
come as close as possible to
Doussié. This type of wood was
also selected on the basis of delivery
times because the villa had to
be ready by summer. The decision
to lay parquet floors in some
rooms was made only at the last
minute, and at the laying team
was given only fifteen days to cover
around two-hundred square
meters.
In light of these difficulties only a
layered floor - even with a change
in its original color - was deemed
capable of meeting the deadline
while meeting the customer’s other
requisites at the same time.
The parquet selected has three
layers, and its elements were balanced
and studied to ensure the
maximum flexibility and overall
stability. The laying patterns, either
the classic staggered running
floor or ship-deck pattern,
varied at the inclinations required
by the entrance to each
room as shown by the photo.
The parquet was laid on two concrete
floors that were flawless in
terms of constitution and moisture
content. For this reason, except
for the synthetic adhesive,
no other product was required
inside the building, and this was
a big advantage because the customer
had expressly requested that the villa’s interiors be as
free of “chemical intrusions” as
possible.
The skirting was also done in
wood stained to Doussié color.
At first sight, the freshly-laid
wood floor in the empty rooms
appeared to lack elegance, but
with the insertion of the furniture
and décor chosen personally by
the new owners with advice from
local expert designers, it amply
confirmed its decorative function
as a part of the whole.
::: Refined elegance
Despite the fact that a number of
partition walls were knocked
down for purposes of restructuring,
the re-division of the rooms
created areas of admirable formal
severity that were also fluid and
versatile at the same time.
The ground floor (slightly
raised above the area where the
kitchens are located) is entered
directly from the garden
through a wide sliding door
that fills the interiors with light
and air. The living room - with a
fireplace enhanced by a majestic
antique mirror with gilded
frames - is furnished with sumptuous
sofas in white fabric complemented
by a hand-inlaid teak
table. The walls are faced with
precious damask fabrics and
highly particular wallpaper. In
every room above the fabrics on
the wall or wallpaper, gold trim
clearly marks the division from
the ceiling.
A charming guest room on the
ground floor features a ceiling
made with exposed wooden
beams and reeds. The color of the
fabrics used for the bed and the
curtains recalls the fresh sea
breeze that blows in when you
open the French doors, which face
the sea visible beyond the garden.
A stairway completely faced in
precious stone material (known
as rice-grain) ascends to the upper
floor accompanied by an unusual
hand-beaten wrought iron
railing: a unique piece with amazing
architectural shape.
The rooms on the upper floor are
also furnished with taste: wooden
furniture, particular illumination
fixtures, and precious fabrics.
The colour white sets the tone in
the master bedroom: the spongepainted
pastel walls are understatedly
elegant, and gilded finishing,
the minimum period piece
furniture, and gracious illumination
fixtures complete the whole.
::: Floor as decor
Even floors can become a precious
part of the interior décor
with their own color statement.
Wood, on the other hand, is a
material that blends in easily
with this context immersed in
nature. All you have to do is to
look outside the French doors to
see the garden that completely
encloses the building. Then
there’s the sea…
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize
how the use of wood
flooring in an area near the sea is
an entirely logical choice. In this
lovely villa in Sardinia, the parquet
matches both the particular
and precious interior décor and
the virtually unique natural surroundings
outside.
