MADE expo hosts “Growing city” and explains
how to hybridise nature, architecutre and design
Growing city is the main event taking place at the forthcoming MADE expo 2013 Cities and Landscape show. Staged in conjunction with Nemeton Network AAA+A Agricoltura, Alimentazione Architettura and following the success of last year’s venture into construction and landscaping (Esploratorio Costruire Paesaggi) and the 2011 event entitled Vegecture (nature and architecture), Growing City now puts design in the picture as well, with a selection from the Natural Design Exhibition, the world’s first showcase of objects containing plants, and the 2013 Esploratorio
exhibition focussing on landscape regeneration. Growing city gives MADE expo an amazing opportunity to shine the spotlight on the gentle expansion of cities at a more natural pace, with room for plentiful greenery not only in parks and gardens but also by “hybridising” plants with architecture and design.
Cities and gardens merge seamlessly, offering
communities a natural space in which to enjoy life within boundaries that both defend and safeguard. This means going beyond the
mere construction of green areas, and rather hybridising plants with architecture and design. For as long as people and plants occupy separate spaces, it will be impossible to make a true quantum leap – all we will be doing is creating nicer gardens.
What we call “greenery” is in fact not only essential, but the proper surroundings
for the human race, in which it has developed and thrived. Now the challenge is to bring the forest into the city and make it grow in every conceivable corner. This means starting to view buildings as exteriors.
