2014: a positive year
for wood paneling
This figure was released at the annual assembly of the European Panel Federation that
provided last June a timely update
on the state-of-the-art in the sector and confirmed increases
in sales for the principal types of wood paneling: +3% for chipboard, + 3% for Medium Density fibreboard, and + 6% for Oriented strand board. These numbers are raising hopes for an immediate recovery in operators in the sector, even
if industrialists are concerned about the scarce availability of raw materials (industrial wood residue and recycled wood) that are also in high demand for combustion at biomass power production plants. In this regard, the EPF asked the European authorities to solve this problem by promoting the use of these wood resources in “cascade” in order to give priority to the re-utilization and recycling of wood rather than its combustion. www.europanels.org
For Made Expo,
2015 is already here
The decision to organize the event dedicated to building in 4 “topic areas”: – Constructions and Materials, Building Envelopes and Door and Window Frames, Interiors and Finishing, and Software, Technologies and Services – seems to ensure the success of Made Expo 2015 already, which just 10 months before the event has already received more than 300 pre-registration applications. Thanks also to the concomitance of the 2015 Milan Expo, with which the Made Expo - to be held from March 18 to 21 at the Rho Pero Trade Fair Grounds – has already established a partnership to engender ‘Building the Expo’ (which will provide visitors with an advance look at the content, technologies and materials used for the construction of Expo 2015), the participation of many representatives from abroad is foreseen. These highly- qualified visitors will include interior designers, architects, and contractors from over 27 foreign countries, including Nigeria in which
a delegation from the event has already received ample approval. www.madeexpo.it
The European Poplar Association holds its 6th General
Assembly and 4th European Poplar Congress in Belgium
On invitation of its Belgian members (Fédération nationale des Scieries - FNS, Union nationale des Entreprises du Bois – UNEBO, Centre de Populiculture du Hainaut - CPH and Union flamande pour l’Exploitation
de la Forêt – UVB), Pro-Populus gathered on 19 and 20 June 2014 in Ghent at the occasion of its 6th General Assembly, 4th European Poplar Congress and field visits. At the time of closing this two-day programme, all participants
recognised that poplar is a qualitative species characterized by a fast growth, which can offer swift solutions to safeguard the future availability of wood, contribute to a more durable and greener economy and help mitigating climate change. They all agreed to continue their cooperation to sensitize European policy makers about these inherent advantages, which are great assets for reaching the European targets in terms of sustainable development. www.pro-populus.eu.
WHAT’S UP
Peggy Guggenheim
Café renovation by
Italian companies
The Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice has a new café located inside Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The high-design furnishings and décor were created by Arclinea, and precious contributions were provided by both Mapei
and Hausbrandt, which together with Arcilinea and Hangar Design Group are part of Intrapresae Collezione Guggenheim, a group of companies that has been faithfully supporting all the museum’s activities for years, sharing the same passion for art and the same belief in cultural expression as the modern form of company communication. Inside the café, attention has been lavished on the intersection of the natural light that filters into the veranda from the garden with the artificial light coming from the Peggy chandelier made by the Vistosi company and conceived specifically for this location. www.mapei.it
