FEDERLEGNO for WORLD FOREST WEEK

Federlegno-Arredo, the Italian Federation of Wood Industries, Cork, Furniture and Interior Décor donated an enormous wooden chair for World Forest Week to be celebrated in Rome, March 16 - 20, 2009 to the FAO (the United Nations Food and Agricolture Organization). The chair will be kept on permanent display in the FAO headquarters hall.
This chair symbolizes the value of wood as the versatile and energetically efficient 100% recyclable and ecological raw material par excellence it is. The chair is over 4 meters high and 2 meters wide, and entirely constructed in pine. In front of the chair, a sign indicates the amount of carbon dioxide stored inside: the 5 tons of wood composing the chair contain a quantity of CO2 equal to 9.15 tons.

Parquet for BIO-CONSTRUCTION

“Vintage Gazzotti: parquet for bio-construction - building that respects both people and the environment”. That’s the title of the recent publication with which this company from Bologna (Italy) provides a clear and concrete definition of its own experience along the road to ecologically compatible building in the absence of an objective regulatory framework. After defining the key features of biological construction, Gazzotti outlines its own “ecologically compatible approach” as applied to every company phase (from the purchasing of the raw material to the various phases of the production cycle before referring to laying and maintenance).
The vital question of energy savings is considered at the end by both describing the role played by Gazzotti as CasaClima partner and providing important technical data on Vintage Line products.
The manual’s goal is to help consumers make informed and responsible choices when selecting finishing materials.

Global economic crisis halts growth in parquet sector

After several years of steady growth, 2008 saw a decline of parquet sales on the European market. FEP, the Brussels based European Federation of the Parquet Industry, estimates that based on preliminary information obtained from companies in its member countries, parquet sales in 2008 dropped by nearly 7% over 2007. This fall appears to reflect the relapse witnessed in the flooring market in general. In the same line, a regression in parquet production volumes was also apparent in the global EU area.
This new development does not come as a surprise, as the steadily weakening tendency was observed throughout most of last year and especially during the last quarter.
The slackening performance of the traditionally largest markets (Germany, Spain and France in particular) that played such a big role in the sharp drop in local construction businesses, affecting both the delivery of new dwellings and to a lesser degree the renovation segment, is certainly one of the major factors behind the general market decline. Available data presently peg total consumption in the EU/EFTA area at around 112 million m2. FEP wishes to stress, however, that complete statistical data will only be available at its General Assembly next June.
